Songs that were cut from the album Ticonderoga, released late 2010.

We're coming up on the four-year anniversary of the recording of Ticonderoga, at Clubhouse Studio up in Rhinebeck, NY. I remember cooking a lot, and also feeling anxious about being the leader of such an expensive endeavor with so many people involved. Am I good enough for this? Am I convincing? Is it interesting? Am I being true to the songs? I was often conflicted in my dual role of close friend and shot-caller.

Once we finished recording the band, we went back home to Brooklyn and spent six months doing vocals, mixing, mastering. And then I hated it. Throughout that period I had gone through a gory breakup and quit smoking, and once we had the finished product I made the wrenching decision that I wanted to scrap the vocals and completely re-mix the whole thing. (Eesh.)

Three songs got the axe, as well. I didn't think they fit in with the southern-tinged, live, dusty aesthetic I had been seeking. Listening now, I still stand by my instinct that they weren't right for the album. I had been on a songwriting binge and these still feel a little undercooked to me. The band is perfect, though. Their arrangements are inspired, intricate, epic. It's a time capsule of emotion. I am so glad we got through that weird time unscathed, in the long run at least.
